This Privacy Policy explains what information Latter-day Search (“we”, “us”) collects when you use latterdaysearch.com, how we use it, and the choices you have. We have tried to keep it specific and honest rather than generic.
Information we collect
- Account information. If you create an account, we store your email address and an encrypted (hashed) password through our authentication provider, Supabase. We never see or store your password in plain text.
- Search activity. When you are signed in, your searches (the query text, the libraries searched, and a cached copy of the results) are saved to your search history so you can return to them. If you are not signed in, your recent searches are stored only in your browser’s local storage, not on our servers.
- Notebooks and shared content. If you save passages to a notebook or create a share link, that content is stored so the feature can work.
- Billing information. If you subscribe, payments are processed by Stripe. We do not collect or store your card number; we keep only the identifiers and subscription status Stripe returns to us so we can manage your subscription.
- Feedback. If you submit the feedback form, we store your message, the category you chose, and any email address you optionally provide.
- Usage and performance analytics. We use Vercel Web Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand aggregate traffic and page-load performance. These are privacy-friendly and do not use advertising cookies or build cross-site profiles of you. We also use Sentry to monitor errors and performance so we can fix problems; it is configured not to attach your IP address by default.
How your searches are processed
To return semantic results, the text of your query is sent to OpenAI to generate a numerical representation (an embedding) used for matching. Your query is processed for this purpose and is subject to OpenAI’s API data-handling terms. We do not use your searches to train any model.
Cookies
We use cookies that are necessary for the site to function, primarily to keep you signed in. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
How we use your information
- To provide search, history, notebooks, sharing, and subscriptions.
- To operate, secure, debug, and improve the service.
- To communicate with you about your account (for example, email confirmation).
- To enforce rate limits and prevent abuse.
Sharing of information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with the service providers that make the app work — Supabase (database and authentication), Vercel (hosting and analytics), OpenAI (search processing), Stripe (payments), Sentry (error monitoring), and our email provider — and only as needed to provide the service, or where required by law.
Data retention
We keep your account data while your account is active. Cached search results expire automatically after 30 days unless you star a search to keep it. You can delete your account at any time from your settings, which removes the data we hold that is tied to your account.
Your choices
- You can use the app without an account; in that case your history stays in your browser.
- You can delete individual searches, or delete your entire account, from the app.
- You can manage or cancel a subscription through the billing portal.
Children
The service is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date above.
