Reading a result card
What every part of a card means, from the colored badge to the topic chips.
Every result is one passage, shown word for word, with enough around it to tell where it came from and to take it somewhere else. Here is a card from top to bottom.
The colored band
The band across the top is the library's color: blue for Scriptures, pink for General Conference, teal for Gospel Topics, violet for BYU Studies, orange for Liahona, indigo for BYU Speeches, emerald for Interpreter, red for JBMS, amber for Hymns, cyan for Religious Educator, lime for Scripture Central and fuchsia for the Apocrypha. The document's title sits in the band in white. A scripture card is titled by its verse, for example "Alma 32:21".
The source line
The gray line under the band says who and where, and it varies by library. A General Conference card gives the speaker and the conference, such as "April Conference, 2024"; the name appears as the source records it, so it may start with "Elder" or "President". A journal or magazine card gives the author, the venue and usually the year. A scripture card names the volume, such as Book of Mormon. An Apocrypha card reads "King James Version", and a Gospel Topics card simply "Gospel Topics".
The passage
The passage is shown in full, never cut short, with its paragraph breaks kept. Nothing is summarized or reworded.
The icon row
- Bookmark, "Save to a notebook". Adds the passage to one of your notebooks. Signed-out readers are asked to sign in first.
- Copy, "Copy chunk and citation". Copies the passage and a formatted citation. The icon turns into a check for two seconds. See Citations and links.
- External link, "View original source". Opens the passage at its source in a new tab.
- X, "Remove card". Appears only on a saved search, which means you are signed in. See Arranging results.
Expand
The chevron at the bottom of the card, "Expand", reveals the library label, the text just before and just after the passage, marked with "..." where it continues, and the card's topics. Clicking elsewhere on the card does not expand it. "Collapse" closes it again.
Topics
An expanded card shows a "Topics" row: up to three topics the document is tagged with, the one closest to this passage first. Click a name to open its topic page in a new tab. The small funnel beside each name narrows the current search to that topic and runs it again; see Filtering by topic. A topic already applied to the search is not repeated here, and a search reopened from long ago may have no topics at all.
What a card does not show
There is no relevance score and no ranking number. Cards do not highlight the words you typed, because the search matches meaning rather than words; only the source card highlights. The best match is simply the first card.
