Looking up a scripture reference
Type a reference such as Moroni 10:4 and the verse appears above the results.
Type a scripture reference and the verse itself appears in a card above the results: the full text, a copy button and a link to the chapter. The results underneath stay what they always are, passages that match the meaning of what you typed.
What is recognized
- Book, chapter and verse:
Moroni 10:4,Alma 32:21. A period between chapter and verse works too, as inMosiah 2.17. - A range such as
Alma 32:21-23. The card shows the first verse of the range. - Common abbreviations:
2 Ne 2:25,D&C 76,JS-H 1:17. Numbered books can be written 1 Nephi, 1st Nephi, First Nephi or 1Ne. - One-chapter books take a verse number on its own:
Articles of Faith 13,Jude 3. - A reference with a verse counts anywhere in the query. A chapter on its own, such as
D&C 76, counts only when it is the whole query, and the card then shows verse 1. - If you type more than one reference, the first one is used.
Not recognized: John 3 16 with a space where the colon should be, books of the Apocrypha, section 76, and Joseph Smith Translation references. A reference inside a quoted phrase, as in faith "Alma 32:21", is treated as words to search for rather than a lookup.
What the card shows
The card carries the marks "Exact match" and "Scripture", a title in the short form used for that book, such as Moro. 10:4, and the whole verse. "Copy quote and attribution" copies the verse in quotes with its reference and a link. "Open the original source" opens the chapter on churchofjesuschrist.org scrolled to that verse.
When talks and articles in the libraries quote the verse, a line reads "N sources quote this". "See everything" opens the list, earliest first and up to twenty of them, each entry linking to its source. The card is the same one described in The source card.
The results underneath
The card answers the reference. The results answer your words, by meaning, exactly as in any other search. The verse itself may not be among them, because a verse in the scriptures does not carry its own reference as text.
Filters such as SPEAKER: or TOPIC: narrow the results as usual and leave the card alone. Copying a citation from a result card, rather than from this card, is covered in Citations and links.
